Winifred (Rand) Welch of Newington died Saturday, November 3, 2012 at her home.

She was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on February 2, 1921, the daughter of Norman E. and Dorothy (Higgins) Rand. She graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1938 and Colby Junior College in 1940.

Winifred was a member of the Middle Street Baptist Church and the Newington Town Church, the Newington Church Reapers, Daughters of the American Revolution, and was a past board member of the Chase Home for Children.

She was predeceased by her husband John R. Welch.

Survivors include her sister, Frances Snook; sons, Peter J. Welch and his wife Gail, and Jack S. Welch and his wife Shirley; a daughter, Barbara Welch and her husband John DelVecchio; grandchildren, Amanda Welch, Heather Abbott, Jennifer Welch, Kate and Christine DelVecchio; great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Abbott; nieces, nephews, and friends.

Memorial visitation will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 PM on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth, NH. Weather permitting, graveside services will be held on Friday, November 9, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the Newington Cemetery; otherwise services will be in the Newington Church, Newington, NH. Friends are invited. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Newington Langdon Library, 328 Nimble Hill Road, Newington, NH, 03801, or to your local animal shelter
