New Castle – Helen M. (Nickles) Merrill, 86, of Beach Hill Rd., New Castle, died Thursday, November 8, 2012 at her home.

She was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, on September 6, 1926, the daughter of Harold and Nellie (Morrill) Nickles.

Helen was formerly employed as a switchboard operator at the Lowell Sun, retiring after 25 years.  Along with her husband David, they owned and operated Merrill Real Estate and Development Co. and upon retirement, moved to New Castle, NH.

Helen was a member of the Board of Realtors in Massachusetts; she enjoyed biking along the coast, dancing and especially shopping.

Besides her husband of 42 years, David E. Merrill, survivors include a sister, Jacqueline Markum of Stamford, CT; a brother, Charles Nickles of Windham, NH; and many nieces & nephews.

Services: Visitation hours will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on Monday, November 12, 2012 at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home – Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth, NH.  A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at the funeral home.  Friends invited.   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Dover Children’s Home, 207 Locust Street, Dover, NH; www.doverchildrenshome.org.
