Gloria Ann Berry, 78, of Portsmouth, died November 24, 2012 at home to failing health.
She was born July 6, 1934 in Portsmouth, NH, daughter of Richard and Isabelle (Gladding) Felker. She attended local schools and graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1952. She was a member of the National Honor Society. At graduation, she was awarded the Haven Medal for three years excellence in History.
During her long work career, she worked at J. J. Newberry’s, Sise Insurance Company, Rival Foods, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Key West Naval Station, Sibson Memorial Company, Office of Personnel Management, Wright Pierce and the Internal Revenue Service. She retired from the Internal Revenue Service in April 1995 with over 25 years of government service. She was a lifelong member and communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church. For many years, she used her talents for sewing and crafting to benefit the Church’s fundraising fairs.
She was an active member of the Portsmouth Women’s City Club, the Portsmouth Garden Club and the Portsmouth Historical Society.
She enjoyed traveling, sewing, crafting, reading and gardening. Her grandchildren, Ketura (Kacey) and Lowell Berry, were a source of joy for her.
She married her husband, Lowell, September 26, 1953, and had a son, Michael. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed by all.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Lowell; her son, Michael Berry and his wife Marjorie Alvord of Berkeley, CA; and grandchildren she adored Ketura (Kacey) C. Berry and Lowell M. Berry also of Berkeley; her sister, Patricia Guillemette of Manchester, NH; her nephew, Larry Guillemette and wife Virginia; niece, Jane A. Paquin and husband Michael; nephew, James Guillemette and wife Lisa; uncle, Junius A. Mattoon and his wife Marjorie of Mobile, AL; and many cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 3:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth. Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Friday, November 30, 2012 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 101 Chapel Street, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Flowers will be accepted.
