NEWINGTON – Clifford “Skip” Nelson Abbott, 81, of Newington, passed away Monday, December 17 at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital surrounded by family.

Born January 15, 1931 in Exeter, he was the oldest son of Clifford and Mary (Winiarski) Abbott of Newmarket.

Clifford married his loving wife of 51 years, Marie Blanche (Vilandry) Abbott, in 1961 and lived in Newmarket until 1996 when they moved to Newington.

Clifford was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army and served at the Seventh Army Headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany, Office of the Judge Advocate General, during the Korean Conflict. He worked at Kidder Press and led a long career at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as an engineer. He was a former Commander of the Newmarket American Legion #67.

An avid genealogist, he was a member and published contributor to the National, New England Historical, and American-Canadian Genealogical Societies, Fryeburg Historical Society and Family History Library in Salt Lake City.

Clifford was an active member in local government and held positions in Newmarket and Newington ranging from Planning and Zoning Boards, Budget Committee, Historical Society and Chairman of the Newington Cemetery Committee.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Blanche; his son, C Alexander Abbott and grandson, Benjamin Abbott of Dover; daughter, Amy M Abbott of Portsmouth; a brother, Dennis Abbott and his wife Evelyn of Newmarket; and two sisters, Marilyn Forbes and her husband Frank of Pennsylvania, and Irene LaBranche and husband George of Virginia; and many loved nieces and nephews.

A memorial visitation will be held from 1 to 2 pm with a memorial service immediately following at 2 PM, Friday, December 28 at the J Verne Wood Funeral Home – Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St, Portsmouth. Flowers will be accepted and/or donations may be made to New Heights, 100 Campus Drive, Suite 23, Portsmouth, NH 03801 or special donation link at www.newheightsonline.org.
